BITE-SIZED: The Satanic Rites of Dracula (Alan Gibson, 1973)

Dr Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) and his niece Jessica (Joanna Lumley) join forces with London police to track members of a strange new cult led by a  mysterious figure intent on taking over the world…

At this stage of the Dracula ‘saga’, I was watching these movies with the same mindset as Christopher Lee - by contractual obligation.

Made by the same team behind AD 1972 as a direct sequel, this movie is trying. I just found it to be a bore.

The series was trying anything to stay relevant - here it is going for a low-budget riff on James Bond, with Dracula behind the scenes as an evil mastermind, who is developing a plague to wipe out humanity.

While the stars are back again, the film around them is more like a low-energy action thriller.

As Lee’s final appearance, it is a disappointment - caught in trees, he is immobilised before being staked.

The first film in this watch-along where I actively had to force myself to keep watching.
